PRAYER

Jesus, we yearn for You. Fill us today as we begin with your simple gospel: the forgiving love of Jesus. Send Your powerful Holy Spirit to guide us back to the center of our faith and life. We want to be with you, our friend, Jesus. Hear us as we pray and worship You. Amen.

LYRICS

SIMPLE GOSPEL by Brock Human and Will Reagan

VERSE 1
I want to know You Lord like I know a friend
I want to know You Lord
I want to know You Lord like I know a friend
I want to know You Lord

CHORUS 1
So I’m laying down all my religion
I’m laying down
I want to know You Lord
So I’m laying down all my religion
I’m laying down
I want to know You Lord

VERSE 2
I used to think that I could box You in
But I’m laying down
I want to know You Lord
I used to think that I could box You in
But I’m laying down
I want to know You Lord

VERSE 3
Lord I’ve been told to be ashamed
Lord I’ve been told I don’t measure up
Lord I’ve been told I’m not good enough
But You’re here with me

BRIDGE
I reach out and You find me in the dust
And You say no amount of untruths can separate us

CHORUS 2
I will rejoice in the simple gospel I will rejoice in You Lord
I will rejoice in the simple gospel I will rejoice in You Lord
I will rejoice in the simple gospel I will rejoice in You Lord

A THOUGHT & SCRIPTURE

This song is a great reminder to all lifelong Christians, young Christians or those who are asking questions about Jesus. It’s not about choices you’ve made in the past, lies you’ve been told about measuring up, the books you’ve read about God, the theology classes you’ve taken or the new/old way your church “does” it.

It’s about a personal relationship with Jesus.

He died for you. He gave it all. For you. To know you. Everything about you. He wants to be close to you. To share your life with Him. He rose from the dead to conquer all of those sins and struggles and fears and despair you may have. He is our only hope and He’s powerful to save.

This song also tackles something the younger generation has been wrestling with for a number of years : religion. Lately, “religion” gets a bad rap, but I’m not going to get into the details of that right now. I’m just going to mention that those troubled by “religion” aren’t questioning the power and love of Jesus, they’re just asking tough questions about how we go about worshipping Jesus, organizing the church and teaching about Jesus within religions as it stands today.

As you sing this song, be reminded that the Christian Church around the world has done amazing things only through the power of Jesus Christ and the Grace of God. Only by the power of God has the church done this and for that, we worship Jesus. Worship Him because you have a personal, daily relationship with Him and He is King of Your Heart and Soul. He doesn’t judge you by your denomination, where you studied the scripture, who taught you, what books you’ve read, what your church looks like or how long you’ve been a Christian…or even by what you’ve done!

He judges you by who you’ve put your trust in.

It’s the simple Gospel.

After Jesus had died, risen from the dead, spent 40 days with his disciples and then ascended into heaven, the leading religious leaders of the time still had an issue with Jesus’ message…

Acts 4:13 says, Now when they [ruling elders, scribes teachers] saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus.

The ruling elders in Jerusalem commanded them not to teach or speak about Jesus again.

Soon after in Acts 4:19…“But Peter and John answered them, ‘Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge, for we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard.'”

Just like Peter and John, no matter where you are in life, no matter what you “know,” you can simply speak of what Jesus has done in your life. Where has He healed you? How has softened your heart and restored a relationship? How has he saved you?

Jesus is with you. The more time you spend with Jesus in prayer, in scripture, and seeing the world through His eyes, the more you can rest assuredly in nothing more than the power of the simple Gospel.

And this is the simple, complete Gospel which we fully lean upon:

John 3:16 – “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.”

We are saved by Grace. That’s all that truly matters.

VIDEO – Sing, pray, listen and let God speak to your heart.

PRAYER

Jesus, we thank You for Your simple, beautiful Gospel. We pray that we would spend more time with You. Call us, inspire us, guide us and lead us to prayer and Your Holy Word, the Bible. Surround us with friends who will challenge us and encourage us to know you personally first above anything else the world would tell us to do. We love you. Amen.
