Monday Music No.21 – Angel High-Fives

This has been a crazy few weeks of travel and there’s still more to come! I wanted to quickly share a song that hooked me into Christian Rock Music many years ago. When I was in junior high and high school in the 90s, there wasn’t a whole lot of solid Christian rock/worship music like there is now. Plus, I would’ve rather been playing G’NR or Weezer or Pearl Jam with my friends in our band.

In 1998, the Newsboys released Entertaining Angels on their album Step Up to the Microphone. It was one of the few songs I really liked on the album, but it really hooked me. The lyrics were curious and the music solid.

It referenced a slightly obscure passage from Hebrews 13:2 – Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it.

I love the idea that when we show hospitality to those outside of our normal context and love them like Jesus would, the angels are entertained! They’re sitting by the “light of their tv screen” waiting and watching to see what wonderful things we’re doing in the name of Jesus, our God and King. How are we spreading His joy and grace and mercy to the world?

What angels are giving each other high-fives as they rejoice and celebrate with you as you live as one who was “created to do good works”.

Heavenly Father, may we be inspired to love as you have loved us. We pray that we don’t love in order to entertain angels, but we are thankful for the encouragement of other believers here on Earth, as well as in the Heavenly realms. Thank for you making us a part of your family. We love you, Jesus. Amen.
