Monday Music No.6 – You Shine Through

Monday Music is a short (10 min) stop at the beginning of the work week to be guided through a time of scripture, discussion, worship and prayer. I hope you’re encouraged and strengthened by it. Click the follow button or leave a comment, I’d love to connect! – Seth

God, You are light. You are love. You shine through the darkest of nights. Shine into the dark places of our souls where we may be hiding things that only You know. Things we don’t want others to see. Heal those places, God. Take them away from us and turn us back to You in humility and repentance. Because, we know that You welcome us with a gentle touch and a warm embrace. Your love is filled with generous light that fills our souls. Shine through us, God. Amen.

You shine brighter when we’re broken,
With our hearts stretched out upon the floor
In our weakness and our failures,
Your light shines beauty to this world
From our broken hearts, we’re crying out

Through the cracks in all of us,
Through the fractures and our dust,
You shine through, You shine through
In the darkness You’re the dawn,
Blazing like the morning sun,
You shine through, You shine through

No our sin will not define us,
For Your cross, it speaks the final word
Guilt and shame are now behind us,
And You are making us brand new
From our broken hearts, we’re crying out

From our broken hearts, we’re crying out
From our deepest scars, we’re singing out

(You shine through us, oh Father. Bring out all the colors of Your love.
Embrace us as we sing, as we come to You.)

You shine through us
You shine through, oh God

(Like a stained glass window, You shine through us, oh Father, bringing out every single color. May we bear Your image, Your likeness in this world. Restore our hearts. Shine through us.)

You shine through us
You shine through us
You shine through us
You shine through, oh God, Amen

“You shine brighter when we’re broken.”

This song has a great first line, because it makes you double take and wonder for a moment. It’s a contradictory statement to hook you in. I love it. Then on second pass, one may wonder: “God shines brighter when I’m broken…when I don’t do what’s right? How can that be?” This is when it’s helpful to have some scripture and realize that brokenness is often equated with humility.

In John 3:30, John the Baptist says, “He (Jesus) must become greater, I must become less.” (with my own clarification added)

John is saying, that for Jesus to shine brightly and lead the people, he (John) needs to step into humility and realize that Jesus is God and others must follow Him, not John. Through John’s humility, Jesus can be the focus. He is our all and our everything.

The song also says, “In our weakness and our failures, Your light shines beauty to this world.”

Acts 3:19 tells us, Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord.

This is one of my favorite verses in the entire Bible. Luke wrote these words as a reminder that when we realize our sin, our brokenness, and we repent (leaving and turning away from those things that distract us from God) and see the need for forgiveness, God uses that in an amazing way to refresh our spirit and shine out from us. That refreshment is palpable to those we meet and it’s God’s Spirit shining through our brokenness to show the world that God has a wonderful promise of forgiveness for us everyday.

Verse 2 sings, “No our sin will not define us, for Your cross, it speaks the final word.”

1 John 1:7 reads, “But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin.”

In our humility, in our brokenness, we fall at the feet of Jesus, who washes away our sin, fills us with His Spirit, and calls us to live in the light with Him. The light which casts out all darkness and pours the powerful Spirit of God into the world, which needs His love desperately.

We don’t stay in a position of humility. We stand. We walk into the world confidently that we are following Jesus, the savior of the world. The King of Kings and Lord of Lords. His love everlasting and His light never fades. He knows us and desires us. He wants all people to know the forgiving grace of His love, which humbles us to repentance and then rejoices in forgiveness and freedom to live for Him!

VIDEO – Sing, pray, listen and let God speak to your heart.

Lord God, shine through us. Shine through us in a mighty way. Use our humility, brokenness, repentance and confession to show Your might and power to save. Dust us off and make us whole through the power of Your Holy Spirit. Shine through us. Everyday. Amen!
